In 2004, the North Yankton state (located in North Dakota) was home to three bank robbers: Michael Townley, Trevor Philips, and Brad Snider. Together with corrupt federal agent Dave Norton, Michael devises a phony theft in an effort to leave that life behind. Dave had to kill Trevor and detain Brad while Michael pretended to be dead. But because to Dave's mistaken gunshot of Brad instead of Trevor, Trevor manages to flee, and everything goes awry. Michael is sent to Los Santos (San Andreas) with his family under the guise of "Michael De Santa" while being placed under witness protection by corrupt FIB agent Dave Norton, a close friend of the same. Michael is considered dead at this point.
Nine years later, in 2013, Franklin Clinton, who works at a car dealership as a vehicle repossessor, and his friend Lamar Davis are asked to retrieve a car from Michael's son Jimmy, who has fallen behind on the purchase of it. Michael hides in the car and approaches Franklin out of fear that his son may soon fall victim to credit theft. He forces him to smash the car through the store window while they are driving to the dealership. Despite being dismissed, Clinton and De Santa end up becoming friends.
Later, after finding his wife Amanda having a sexual relationship with his tennis coach Kyle Chavis, Michael and Franklin pursue Chavis to a mansion, which Michael then violently demolishes. Unfortunately for him, the property is owned by Natalia Zverovna, the mistress of the aforementioned trainer's former pupil Martn Madrazo, a Mexican drug lord. Iracundo, Madrazo tracks out De Santa and demands payment. They decide to settle their obligation using the cash taken during a heist at a Vangelico jewelry chain store. The other survivor of the Ludendorff robbery, Trevor Philips, learns about the robbery while watching television.
At that moment he realizes that the author could not be other than Townley himself, recognizing him from a phrase he said on the day of the initial robbery.
The protagonists' personal lives start to spin out of control in the meantime. Michael Townley begins acting erratically and recklessly in response to Trevor's sudden presence, which forces his family to flee the house. Similar to Michael, Devin Weston is a wealthy corporate raider and venture capitalist who develops a vendetta against him as a result of Michael's attempts to make something of himself in life. Franklin is troubled by how Harold "Stretch" Joseph, a mobster who joined the Families gang while he was incarcerated, influences Lamar, turning to the opposition (the Ballas), and constantly attempting to kill Lamar in order to impress his new comrades.
After fighting against the motorcycle gang The Lost, the Mexican Varrios Los Aztecas, the Salvadorans La Marabunta Grande, local methamphetamine traffickers, mercenaries hired by the government, and a triad led by Wei Cheng, one of the most significant figures in the Chinese underworld, Trevor makes his efforts to consolidate his power and control over the methamphetamine market in Blaine County.
Franklin Clinton
Young African American gang member who aspires to succeed in the world of crime and get out of his neighborhood. Together with his friend Lamar, he is engaged in repossession of high-end cars for a car sales company, however, unlike him, he has ambition, prudence and brains. After meeting Michael in a failed embargo attempt, she admires him and believes that his experience can help her prosper. His special ability is driving, being able to slow down time when he is at the controls of a vehicle.
Michael De Santa
Michael, a former bank robber, seems to have everything a criminal yearns for: money, a tranquil life, a family, and a large mansion in one of Los Santos' best neighborhoods. This façade, however, conceals a wholly dysfunctional family that includes his wife Amanda, who is unfaithful to him, his children Jimmy and Tracey, who are both completely lazy and spoiled and only enjoy using drugs and playing video games, and a depressed and self-indulgent Michael. Michael gave up his life of crime by striking a deal with agent Dave Norton, and as a result, he is now a participant in the FIB's witness protection program. He is a skilled with weapons, and his specific talent is the ability to halt time, which gives him incredibly high precision.
Trevor Philips
He was Michael's companion in his heists until he faked his death, forcing Trevor to start working alone. He was a former pilot and previous bank robber. He was kicked out of the air force and chose a life of crime since he has a number of psychological issues. Because of these illnesses, Trevor is unpredictable and aggressive, traits that are exacerbated by the fact that he uses and manufactures crystalline methamphetamine, making him a person whom everyone who knows him fears. Although Trevor is an excellent pilot, his distinctive power is his unrestrained rage, which allows the player to deliver twice as much damage to his foes while taking no damage themselves.
